12/13/19 Fri. Today was our last and what I think was the best field day.   My Team, Lucas the videographer and I hiked with another team part of the way on the Water Trail.  The teams split up at the Culvert Creek and our team headed down the stream part way, then up on the land part of the Water Trail to where we had to go off trail to find our sampling site.  The sampling site was the confluence (junction) of our unnamed sampling stream with the Culvert Creek.   Before the confluence the unnamed stream had a big waterfall.  About twice the height of me with my arms up.  It was beautiful.  We did our sampling in this little canyon at the falls and below.  I slid down the side of a big rock that was really slick and the guys helped pull me back up to the top of the rock.  I wasn’t hurt but then just laid down on that side of the rock to finish our invertebrate ID so I wouldn’t slip again.   We then hiked further down Culvert Creek to try find a different section of the Water Trail that is supposed to lead to another waterfall.  We found the other section, but it was too overgrown to continue on any further.  We ate lunch there by the Creek and saw a monkey climbing above in the trees.  We were also visited by another Blue Morpho butterfly there.  We then hiked back the way we came for a total of 5.6 miles round trip. We really deserved our ice cream at the reception building after we got back.

12/12/19 Thurs.   Today my team (Jacob and Alwin) and I hiked again on the water trail probably close to 5 miles and sampled our stream at a different site and habitat.   One of the program coordinators Scott Walter joined us through the morning and helped with the sampling.   He taught us some ethnobotanical things like what we could eat in the forest.   Jacob tried an unripe red banana which smelled like cucumbers and apparently didn’t taste too good.   We all tried the stem of a palm like plant and that tasted pretty good.   It tasted sort of like a moist white carrot.   Scott said he learned how to Id stream macroinvertebrates from us and is thinking about how to use it in some of his courses.   Now he knows how much fun it is and how they can be indicators of water quality.   At lunch on the trail a Blue Morpho butterfly came to visit us again and sat on a leaf right next to us.   He stayed there long enough for me to get some good pictures.   I forgot my walking stick there an

12/8/2019 Sunday. I had a great day getting to know everyone.   I learned about the talented people at   CRIRE this year.    Great students with many talents and interests ranging from photography, painting, drawing, birding, botany, food, etc.   It was nice to learn where everyone was from and about their homes.   What a great mix of curious and adventuresome people.   I know we’ll have a great time learning and researching in Costa Rica together.   Deb

12/10/19 Tues.   This morning we got a tour of the Field Station and the Manager/Naturalist gave a tour of the Botanical gardens.   We learned a lot about the unique plants here and saw some wildlife like a Crested Guan (A bird with a big red crest, long neck   & it is the size of a big chicken) roosting in the trees.   Went on a 2 mile round-trip hike in the forest to the Rio (River) Java through the tropical forest.   Amazing trees and plants.    Spent the afternoon with my team of student mentors planning our research experimental design and our field stream sampling excursions for the rest of the week. Tonight we learned about and met 4   tribal people from Panama who will be demonstrating their knowledge of the ethnobotanical uses of plants over the next few evenings.   It was amazing to hear all of the group introduce themselves and share a little of their backgrounds many in their native languages.
